Faculty Sabbatical Program
Academic Year 2010-2011:
Sabbatical will be granted for the Spring 2011 Quarter
PURPOSE
AiCA-SF’s Faculty Sabbatical Program is intended to provide individuals with opportunities to develop professionally and to renew their creativity or intellectual achievement through study, studio activity, research, writing, or community service. Since the Faculty Sabbatical Program is intended to benefit both the individuals receiving paid teaching release and AiCA-SF, faculty who are granted sabbaticals are expected to present their projects in a public forum during the quarter immediately following the sabbatical quarter. At least one individual shall receive a one-quarter sabbatical during each academic year, subject to the Institute’s budget. Faculty granted sabbatical leave shall receive compensation during the sabbatical period equal to average compensation received during the three (3) quarters prior to the leave.
ACTIVITIES ELIGIBLE FOR SABBATICAL SUPPORT
1) A planned program of courses or relevant activity which relates to the professional development of the applicant and which shall enable the applicant to support AiCA-SF
student learning;
2) Independent study, studio activity, research, and/or writing which relates to current or proposed teaching areas of the applicant;
3) Community service projects which relate to the professional growth of the applicant and which also benefit the organization(s) and/or communities with which the applicant is working.
APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY
All faculty who have taught at AiCA-SF for nine (9) quarters, not necessarily continuous, are eligible to apply for sabbatical leave. Faculty applying for sabbatical leaves need the consent of their Academic Director(s) and are expected to collaborate with their Academic Director(s) in scheduling the leave for the Spring 2011 quarter. Faculty granted sabbatical leave shall not be eligible for another sabbatical leave for 24 months after their leave ends.
CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION OF APPLICATION
Applications shall be evaluated on the following criteria:
· Relevance of the proposed project to the faculty member’s teaching and service responsibilities at AiCA-SF;
· A clearly outlined project with realistic timelines for completion;
· Evidence of the applicant’s ability to make effective use of the proposed sabbatical period as attested to in letters of recommendation, a portfolio of past work, other forms of support (financial or otherwise) for the project;
· Significant service to AiCA-SF as measured by the number of quarters the applicant has been part of the faculty, the number and variety of courses taught, committee membership, other leadership roles within AiCA-SF, etc.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
All complete applications submitted to the Faculty Development Director by Thursday, December 23, 2010 shall be read by an Academic Affairs committee and shall be ranked on the above-named criteria. Incomplete applications or applications submitted after the deadline shall not be considered.
A complete application includes:
• An Application Form
• A Project Proposal: a 1,000-word statement describing
1. the proposed project,
2. its relationship to the applicant’s teaching;
3. relevant project milestones; and a proposed public presentation/exhibition at AiCA-SF in the quarter following the sabbatical leave. Applicants should be clear about project objectives and how the project contributes to the applicant’s development as a professional and as an instructor.
• 2-3 Letters of Support for the Project (one must be from applicant’s department director)
NOTIFICATION
Faculty awarded sabbatical leave shall be notified no later than January 21st, 2011with the expectation that the sabbatical period shall occur during the Spring quarter of 2011.
